There are places in Eastern Europe that have suffered far worse since the breakup of the Soviet Union than most Russians can bear to think about, but they're run by psychopaths' puppets, and the people never manage to overthrow them because there's a never-ending supply of them. Whenever they do manage get in someone on their side, the psychopaths hit their mayhem button, and poof. Civilization.
