But it just reminds me of the old Bulgarian Zen monk I knew who'd caught shrapnel in his left arm in WWII, while saving some American troops, and he would not let them amputate it. He kept his arm, but the bone infection never was gone all the way. He'd get nuked with antibiotics, and even radiation once as I recall, but the infection would always return eventually and scare the snot out of any of the radiologists having a look at the problem. Tough as nails, and stubborn as fuck, he finally died with his left arm still attached to his body.
