I think Chavez picked Maduro for his devotion, but he doesn't have the brains and the balls to have done a better job thwarting this full scale attack. He should have had citizen militias on the trucking routes to protect the ambushes and theft of goods bound for market at LEAST a year ago. He should also have had more aggressive Chavistas foiling embassy ops, and "grassroots" [pushbutton] revolutionaries rounded up and deported. And he, above all, needed finance-savvy allies who didn't care if they could smell his weakness so the psychopaths couldn't outspend him by so much.
