The only way I can explain Merkel is that she's under the same constraints as our presidents have been for far too long. There's parts of her leadership that are not up to her, and if she takes the reins, she's dead... or some kind of horrific disgrace gets laid at her feet. Something.
It bothers me because her bearing and physiognomy do not match her actions. She's not on the side she keeps leading. She's both a lot nicer than that and more sensible. I just have this horrible feeling that Germany's so traumatized by the horrors of so long ago being pinned on them that they can't function as a nation under the weight of them.
I can't even remember the source of the first of many times I have seen that the object is always to keep Germany down, even if it means millions of deaths in world wars. Maybe my grasp of history is too weak, or maybe Germany was never actually a country to keep down. I don't know.
