i commend to you this beautiful crap movie — with an absolute crap director; a cast brimming with outstanding actors, dimmed by her to one degree or another; stupendous cinematography and sets; a very sad but deep story; all laden with the frequent and pustulent presence of robert de niro's stardom and new york accent and utter failure to act, even with his elaborate wardrobe to help conceal it — still, there's lots to ponder and appreciate in it — based on a thornton wilder novel that was almost certainly better....
