I have been contemplating the howling hysteria about Fukushima for the last couple hours. I'm going to say one thing for sure, and that is that unless there is another big explosion there, the vast bulk of the awfultude is staying right there. I don't think anybody knows for certain whether large amounts of nuclear fuel melting through their containment and pooling together will go critical and cause the awful nuclear decay products to start wafting all over the place, or if they'll just burrow into the ground water and cause a big explosion that way, or if they'll just sink into the molten core of the earth and burst forth someday on the other side of the globe, or if they'll just sit there giving off death to anything that comes near. We have every reason to believe that fuel hot enough to cause criticality has already done its worst... the stuff in the initial reactor meltdowns. The spent fuel pools are full of fuel that is still hot, but much less hot and the fuel metals have very high boiling points.

I don't know at what point the cesium and strontium come into play. I think it's only upon criticality, as with bombs. I think we've already seen the worst of that from the core meltdowns and it is a big question if the spent fuel pools can contribute enough oomph to cause more of that. If they can, the decay products will combust, into flames, since they're not contained, and that would not be the least fun. And that would be when cement starts being dumped on it.

Assuming it's still radioactive at all.

I'm LOOKING AT IT NOW and there is a big problem in this picture.

Over a year later, the brush around the decimated plant is lush and green as ever. Ask the people of Chernobyl if this signifies.

And make it a practice to visit the RADIATION NETWORK every day, and see if the numbers there square with the terror being meted out by sensationalists and fear mongers. If you don't want to be xenophobic, check the page for JAPAN while yer at it.

No. Really. Pull yourself together and look hard. Think rationally. Read up on the Chernobyl accident to get a better idea of what happens. Scrutinize the Periodic Table and click on the elements that scare you the most to learn about their properties. Don't listen to frightened witless nincompoops like Clif High. Don't listen to Marcus Limited Hangout Welby [Gundersen]. He, for fucksakes, can't even keep it straight whether there even is a fuel pool left at #3 [THERE ISN'T] or whether it is [would be] more dangerous than the fuel pool at #4 [it would be if it were still there]. And, if you didn't learn which sites are total sensationalistic horseshit during the Gulf Blowout, quit Fukushima surfing.

No. Really. The imperative is for you to get a grip.

They want us terrified. That is their number one imperative.

Deny them.
