Oh, sorry, I forgot about the language. Helps if you've read the book, but it may take you almost all the way through the movie to figure out that he's a famous guy who is sick and needs a long rest. He comes to Venice. Venice is having a cholera outbreak, but they aren't telling tourists... and, anyway, our protagonist finds himself unable to tear himself away.
You don't need to know the words.
