I should explain, remind you.... Alan Watts was not a Zen master. He was extremely well educated and told everyone quite plainly that he was not a teacher but an entertainer. This should be taken to heart because, while he had an excellent grasp of all that academia had gathered by his day, this is not the same as the teaching. This is a crucial point.

He had a decent grasp of it in many respects, and I am certain he had experienced the crucial insight, but, no, he was not a master. He just happens to be the best we have available to the general public that doesn't involve buying lots and lots of extremely good books... the lion's share of which have been translated by Thomas Cleary.
