All those scary-looking celebrities who have facelifts and duck lips and botox when they start to look their age? Well, it's not pure vanity. No matter how many times you sat yourself down and counseled yourself not to rely on all that attention, when it starts to ebb it is disorienting, to put it mildly. It's actually terrifying, even as you know that is silly as silly can get, because the truth is still the truth, and not many of them even think of your welfare anymore, even when the chips are all the way down. Having to learn that when you are fifty or sixty, even when you knew it all along, is not for wimps.
