They let you think soooo much of the stuff they tell you is what they themselves have figured out, when actually, they've read about it or seen it on tv or heard it on old radio shows. They appropriate obscure jokes. They pretend to formulate genius scenarios that will soon be proven out. And, no shit, the more they insist persnicketily on copious citation, or plain old name dropping, the more apt they are to take stuff and pretend it's theirs.
