I think the fact that the fire was moving so fast will end up leaving way more trees alive than might have been expected. I've been noticing in the blur of images the past couple days that so many trees seem almost unscathed next to the burnt houses and cars and critters.

Another positive thing is that some evacuees got their horses to stop obsessing on home before they left. This involves getting them out of their barn or corral or pasture, and locking them out, else they are more likely to go back to them for "safety". That's their first instinct when the chips are down. Foreclose that option and they will sensibly choose another means to escape a fire.
