On the one hand, you are better off learning about Buddhism at university than you are at almost any practice center or monastery nowadays, but on the other, if you don't use that solely to help you become conversant enough with the canon to study and practice it yourself, you are fucked.
You won't be able to recognize the real unless you do, or interest anyone whose support can help you over the hump, but what still amazes me is how there can be so few whose true drive is deep enough to get them even in the ballpark.
