I still wonder about the time factor, though, because I know how long it can take for damaged nerves to repair themselves... I mean, I know this is fuzzy, but I think most people are done trying by the time a severely damaged nerve might repair itself... and that training an undamaged one to do in its stead or prompting growth of new nerve tissue would rather seem to require electrical cues from someone with an intimate understanding of the problem.
