The real deal was never going to have run-ins with religion, but it has not been the real deal in centuries, and less and less so over all that time. Even if you want to completely discount religion, for all its serious flaws and charlatans as avid to mindfuck for cash as scientists, just replace it with SENSE and you are most of the way to enlightening being.
