And, in general, weather has been darn weird for entirely too long, you still can't discount the perfidious intent behind keeping everyone scared to greet the day for fear of what new horror will pounce.
It has nothing to do with reality or dealing with it.
It has only to do with keeping the population managed.
If we suddenly throw down our artificially-induced terror and petty enmities to make sense prevail, the psychopaths are down for the count and can't get back up again any time soon.
