There have been some crimes so heinous I have wished for the swift death of the perpetrator, but then felt remorse for letting my anger turn me momentarily feral. Life without parole is plenty stiff enough for those guys and makes some room for a creature to learn and reform and cease being a node of hate in the cosmos.
I still hate Grease Slick and think he should be one of those lifers who can never get parole, and don't really hold any hope he can live to fix that bent cosmos wobbling around in his skin, but we make enough mistakes in judgments and sentencing that this will keep us from murdering someone innocent.
