Either the commanders need to retreat, but can't stand leaving their wounded, or they leave their wounded and the Russians go out and risk their lives to save the Ukrainian wounded.

Other times, also, bunches of Ukrainians simply surrender at their first opportunity — with or without wounded — because they are hungry and cold and stranded and were beaten up on the street to be dragged to the front. There's that.

They know for sure the Russians won't hurt them if they drop their weapons and raise their hands. They also have a radio frequency where they can call the Russians and tell them they are surrendering.
