I have been looking around, and I think he started out as what we now call an Ethiopian Wolf. Back in ancient Egypt, you may recall from a million documentaries, there was Upper Egypt and Lower Egypt. Upper was in the south, including what is now the Ethiopian Heights... where these pups are today big time endangered.
If you look at all the glyphs and sculptures, he just seems too big and manly, whether in mask or full body, to be a jackal. Jackals are quite a bit smaller and their faces are more compact. I mean, I know about artistic license, styles. The wolf still fits much better and isn't a jackal.
Jackals are more like foxes, maybe even coyotes, and wolves are more serious and dangerous characters, more admirable, more like spirits to whom one would entrust matters of eternity.
Maybe you don't care. I have spent a few hours on this point today. I still need to go look to see if I can find John Anthony West talking about the sphinx dating again, and about the stretches of time involved if we take the Egyptian kings list seriously.
Disregarding my problem with the postcard from Auntie Billie where it showed Giza being guarded by TWO sphinxes, there's still the matter of my conviction that the whole matter of Orion's Belt and Leo facing Leo does not really work... not just because it probably was not a lion, but Anubis all along. It just felt wrong, and I remember JAW was saying he thought it was a lot older than twelve thousand years.
He'd been trying to keep it with the astrological part, but as we have come to know, their astrology was NOT our astrology, and there are Canis Major and Minor out there to consider, too, you know... well, really, I think Major ought to be the focus, since ancient people would have gotten "dog" or "wolf" out of it pretty fast.
Basically, if you've got to have constellations to face on the horizon, it would just as likely be Canis Major as Leo, no? Is that off piste? I don't care. This seems to help my unease about the Egypt hucksterism a jot.
pipe up any time....
