I think the timing of the air attacks and missile counter-attacks will be the critical element. Iran presumably will know (from agents/observers and Russian/Chinese ISR) the dispositions of the KC-135 and other air refuelers, which will need to get out in front of the attack aircraft.quoth matt bracken
There must certainly be an intense debate going on in Iran about the optimal moment to strike the air bases in Israel, Jordan and Saudi, in order to catch the most aircraft on the ground, after the first wave is airborne and the USAF is fully committed to the attack. Feints will be used to try to draw out the Iranian launchers to early, etc.
Pitting and cratering runways during high-tempo air operations can cripple the attack and strand airborne jets in the sky with no safe landing strips. It will all be in the timing, with Iran striking when the USAF and IDF/AF attacker is fully committed and most vulnerable. The critical timing will be a matter of hours and even minutes. A cratered or pitted runway at the worst/best moment when aircraft are lined up to fly can change the outcome of the entire air battle.
