Do indulge their tastes and individuality, but don't take no crap. ALL that is necessary to prevent the tantrum act is to make sure their needs are met and be consistent, immediately following through on any and every threat of consequences. It takes approximately five minutes, usually once, but in any case extremely rarely, to have to be the hard guy with your kid... unless it's a psychopath.
